According to legend, Jörmungandr was the son of Loki, and as he grew to enormous proportions, the gods cast him into the depths of the ocean. There, he surrounded Midgard, forming an unbreakable ring. Prophecy states that during Ragnarök – the end of the world – he will rise from the sea, engage in a deadly battle with Thor, and both will perish.
